Manufacturers’ Monthly: Better ways bring growth prospects

Another manufacturer on a roll is cabinet maker, Mehmet Karamemis who became frustrated by unreliable service from materials suppliers and felt there had to be a better way.
In 1997, the Turkish migrant established Nu-Door in the Melbourne suburb of Somerton and began servicing a niche market in Victoria with the aim of providing outstanding service to several key accounts including major cabinet makers, shop fitters and furniture makers.
Since then two subsidiary divisions have been established in Melbourne (Nu-Form and Karaboard), as well as a manufacturing plant in Duzce, Turkey. There are now some 50 employees in the Australian operations plus a further 35 in Duzce.
Nu-Form produces laminated bench tops while Karaboard manufactures melamine board in various colours and substrates. The role of Nu-Door is to custom-make doors and cut cabinet panels to size. Large sheets, from which doors and panels can be cut, are exported to the Middle East and NZ, as well as to the Duzce factory, which is now at full capacity.
Nu-Door has a purpose-built factory at Somerton complete with CNC operated routers and a hi-tech membrane press imported from Germany. But operations manager, Steven Jerbic, emphasises that as a small firm, outstanding customer service and flexibility are paramount.
“To remain competitive and continue to grow, it is critical that high product quality is maintained together with consistent lead times and excellent customer service. We aim to remain small enough to care for every order, yet large enough to cope with any demand,” Jerbic told Manufacturers’Monthly.
“Great rapport has been built with our customers because we pride ourselves on being business partners – not just suppliers, and we provide them with service in a manner that they were not used to.
“In this business it is also important to be flexible and be able to change with fashion trends as well as influence them in our own right,” Jerbic said.
